The Seoul Biennale has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and will be held from September 8th until November 21st, 2021. By the end of the year, the exhibition website will publish recordings of discussions and interviews with representatives of the South Korean art scene and curators who will talk about the preparation of the upcoming event and its program.

The theme of the Biennale—One Escape at a Time—refers to the title of the comedy series “One Day at a Time,” dedicated to the life of a Cuban-American family in Los Angeles. In this sitcom, humor is not only a way of escapism, but also an attempt to talk about the current socio political reality and focus on such complex topics as racism, class relations, sexuality, migration, and violence. This approach became the main inspiration for the curators of the Biennale: in their opinion, a revision of the attitude towards escapism will help to better understand the current situation and to provide guidelines for life in a fragmented world.

More information about the participants and the timing of the Biennale can be found on the website mediacityseoul.kr.
