Barjeel Art Foundation

The Association of Modern & Contemporary Art of the Arab World, Iran, and Turkey (AMCA), along with Barjeel Art, have made a call for papers (deadline Sept. 15th) to be included in a new publication. While there has been significant attention concerning art institutions and initiatives in the region of the Arabian Peninsula, this call looks to highlight the longer history of modern art in the area and to better understandings of the Peninsula’s artistic practices through a comparative perspective. The publication will focus on cross-disciplinary scholarly voices that examine the countries of the Arabian Peninsula: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen and the various movements, schools, collectives, manifestos, and debates that arose in and between those countries throughout the 20th century.

According to the call, contributions could cover the following subjects: artists’ monographs, aesthetic debates in the press, artists’ collectives,  exhibition histories, role of public sculpture, and the contextualization of art movements within regional histories. The call welcomes commentary on the "exchange of art and ideas between Gulf countries and their neighbors (e.g, Iran, South Asia, East Africa, and other Arab States) and how those dialogues have informed modern art in the Arabian Peninsula".

Submission should include a 500-word abstract along with a one-page CV. It may also include up to three accompanying images in the body of the word document but this step is optional. Abstracts should be submitted in MS office format and will be accepted in  both English and Arabic. The deadline is September 15th, 2020. Accepted contributions will be due on June 1, 2021.

If interested, please send your abstract to: MAAP@barjeel.com.
