The Terraforming Research Program is a three-year design research initiative and think-tank of Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design. It addresses the topics of geotechnology, geo-urbanism, geoengineering, and explores the new solutions that are needed to keep our planet alive. Young researchers of any specialty can apply for free tuition for Terraforming 2021 until November 4th, 2020.
The focus of research in the first year of Terraforming was centered around the topic of transforming the Earth. In 2021, the focus will be on transforming ourselves. Participants in the program will consider topics such as population distribution and the formal partition of the planet, for example, by territorial boundaries or time zones, and formulate new proposals. They will also turn to the topic of "anthropological formation” and changes in the human body in the process of adapting to the new environment.
The program will take place in the format of a five-month research design laboratory. It will be led by Benjamin H. Bratton, director of The Terraforming Research Program and author of an essay by the same name that formulated its main ideas. The program will be attended by thirty young professionals from around the world with experience in areas such as architecture, design, philosophy, journalism, economics, geography, filmmaking, and many others.
