The Japan Foundation: Sydney Mini Grant Program

The Japan Foundation, Sydney is now accepting applications for its 2024-2025 Mini Grant Program. This program aims to support academic projects in Japanese Studies that foster understanding and relations between Japan and other countries. Eligible projects include conferences, lectures, presentations, and publications conducted or produced in Australia by Australian non-profit organizations. Individuals are not eligible to apply. Successful candidates may be granted up to $4,500 (including GST), depending on the nature of the project.

Eligibility Criteria:

— Applications are open to Australian non-profit organizations such as universities, research institutes, and NGOs/NPOs.
— Projects must aim to develop a wider understanding of Japan through the exchange of ideas at an academic level.
— Suitable projects may include conferences, lectures, presentations, publications, or other relevant activities in the humanities, social sciences, or related fields.
— Projects must be carried out in Australia and completed by February 7th, 2024.

Ineligible Projects:

— Projects that have already received funding from other Japan Foundation grants.
— Japanese language education programs.
— Martial arts, medical, technical, or scientific projects.
— Preliminary research for project development.
— Political, religious, social welfare, or commercial activities.
— Travel from Australia to Japan for research purposes.

The grant may cover the following expenses:

— Domestic airfares, transportation, and accommodation for visiting scholars.
— Honoraria for lectures, interpreters, and panel participation.
— Venue and equipment hire.
— Printing, publicity, and publication costs.
— GST for the grant amount (must be included in the $4,500 maximum amount).

Applications can be made at any time but must be received by The Japan Foundation, Sydney office at least 1 month before the project start date.
