Janub Shamoli: Festival of Women’s Films from the Global South

Samarkand, Uzbekistan. From August 13th through August 18th

Still from the film Se Hoharakon by Fariza Giyosidinova

The Janub Shamoli: Festival of Women’s Films from the Global South is scheduled to take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from August 13th to August 18th, 2024. Organized by a feminist research collective “Maqaal”, the festival aims to showcase films created by women from the Global South, providing a platform for these filmmakers to narrate their own stories and challenge mainstream narratives, which are often dominated by Western, male-centric perspectives. The festival underscores the significance of discussions and dialogue, with collective discussions planned after each screening.

All films will be screened in their original languages, with Uzbek and English subtitles. The primary screening venue will be Art Station, with additional events held at various other locations. Admission to all events is free.

The festival program features over twenty films from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Palestine, India, Vietnam, Georgia, and other countries. Examples include A Magical Substance Flows into Me by Jumana Manna, Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Side Chicks by Intizor Otaniyozova, and Forgetting Vietnam by Trinh T. Minh-ha.

You can find the full program, including detailed information about each screening, on the Maqaal website.
