PhD Candidate in the Cultures of Palestine Solidarity in Europe

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Department of Literature and Culture at Maastricht University is seeking a full-time PhD Candidate for a period of 4 years to explore the cultural histories of Palestine solidarity and cultural activism in Europe.

The research project will focus on the social movement that has arisen in support of Palestinian autonomy, freedom, and liberation, particularly in Europe. The project will investigate the forms of Palestine solidarity in Europe through a postcolonial and transnational lens. The research will include, but not be limited to, examining the development of the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaign, the establishment of Palestine Studies in European universities, the history of transnational networks of Palestine solidarity activism, and the rise of social media as a tool for developing transnational solidarity.

Eligibility for the position requires candidates to hold an MA/MSc degree in History, Literary and Cultural Studies, Politics, Media Studies, or a related discipline (or are expected to obtain such a degree by September 1st, 2024). Candidates should have received excellent grades and have an obvious interest in academic research, particularly historical research methods. They should be capable of conducting original research independently as well as working collaboratively in a team. Proficiency in English is a must, and fluency in Arabic is highly encouraged.

The successful candidate will be employed full-time, with a competitive salary ranging from €2,770 to €3,539 gross per month based on experience and a full-time employment of 38 hours per week. Additional benefits include flexible working hours, the possibility to work partly from home, and a collective labor agreement choice model for personalizing employment conditions.
