RATAN. 21.33. Backcasting Kardashev One is a research project dedicated to energy, civilization, and planetarity by the participants of The Terraforming program of the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design. The exhibition is open until May 16th at the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Nizhny Arkhyz, in the Karachay-Cherkess Republic.

The research is concentrated around a scale proposed by Soviet and Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev in 1964 to classify extraterrestrial civilizations. But the project participants have found a new application for it— analyzing the significance of planetary civilization here on Earth. The central element of the exposition is a two-channel video installation illustrating four scenarios of human development. For each of the forecasts, a "retrospective" of the chains of events in inverse order, from 2600 to 2020, is proposed. The Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences turned out to be the most suitable place for demonstrating the creative ideas of the team of researchers and artists that make up  the project (Yevheniia Berchul, Yulya Besplemennova, Stuart Turner, Iani Zeigerman).

The project was presented by the Gogova Foundation for Cosmonautics Day and for the 60th anniversary of the first manned flight into space.
