The main theme for our fall edition will be "Dream". Last month, EastEast announced an open call in which we invited authors, researchers, and artists to reflect on the meaning of our personal and collective dreams and to suggest ideas for materials on the subject.
The finalists of the competition are Yejoo Kim, Artiom Slota, and the team of Olga Kononova and Oleksandr Burlaka. The winners' contributions will be published on our site in the October-November issue this year.
Yejoo Kim is a PhD student in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California. Her essay will focus on the conflicting nature of reality on the Korean Peninsula. The author will write about her experience of communicating with people who lived on both sides of the demilitarized zone. Starting from this local situation and using a critical approach, Yejoo will reflect on the possibility of dreaming in general and will try to imagine the world that will come after the current ontological crisis.
Artiom Slota is a graduate of the Institute of Philosophy at the St. Petersburg State University. In his essay, he will talk about Muslim modernism as the dream of Islamic intellectuals to find their place in modernity, based on the example of the Russian Empire and reformist thought in the Volga region, Central Asia, and the Caucasus.
Researchers Olga Kononova and Oleksandr Burlaka will present a project aimed at studying the coastal buildings of the village of Zatoka, Odessa region of Ukraine. The emphasis in the material will be on the study of an informal approach to architecture, within which ordinary people become the creators of houses, striving for simplicity and functionality.
We will also publish some interesting texts by other authors in the "Community" section, which will soon appear on the site. We would like to thank all the participants of the open call for their interest and for their applications.
