Personal Exhibition of Saodat Ismailova Opens in Almaty

The exhibition at Aspan Gallery will run from February 20th to April 18th

Saodat Ismailova. Zukhra, 2013
Aspan Gallery

Saodat Ismailova is a film director and artist from Tashkent. She explores the image of women in modern Central Asia, analyzing their fates and reflecting on the system of myths and rituals associated with them. The opening of her first personal exhibition Menim esmim kim edi? (What was my name?) in Kazakhstan will be held on February 20th at Aspan Gallery. You can visit the exhibition until April 18th.

The central element of the exhibition is the video installation "Zukhra," around which objects from the artist's personal collection are gathered. The name of the exposition refers to a work of the same name by Saodat, consisting of a horsehair and a neon inscription in Arabic script in Old Uzbek that reads: "What was my name?" First of all, this installation and the entire exposition is addressed to the artist herself and then to all women of Central Asia who have gone through the political and ideological changes of the last century and its echoes.

The exhibition includes both the artist's early video works and new installations, which are divided into two parts: the main exposition will be held at the Aspan Gallery space and a separate installation will be presented at DOM na Baribayeva, where the artist's documentary Aral: Fishing in an invisible sea will be screened.
